Carolyn Fern and Agnes Baker

dd

"A witch with memories from her former life and the shrink that started to believe!"

Dynamic duo!

This deck is part of a dynamic duo series, and is meant to be played together with Dynamic Duos - Agnes.

There's also an alternative, parallel version of the Agnes deck that can be found here: Dynamic Duo - Agnes "Bad Blood" Baker.

It works just fine when paired with other investigators too, of course, but some cards might be less effective.

Premise

One of them thrives on taking horror, the other thrives on healing horror. Agnes' excellent damage dealing abilities combined with Carolyn Ferns ability to find clues and heal horror will keep our to heroes rich and safe.

Weakness: Carolyn and Agnes are both investigators that require quite a few assets to work. Carolyn for example starts with an of 4. Also, both have low combat and mediocre agility , which can be painful in some campaigns such as the Forgotten Age and Return To Circle Undone. They also both hate Locked Doors, but we have some counter measures

Disclaimer: Inspired by FBones "A witch and her shrink" decks from 2019. He’s the one to blame for this whole project, really. <3

Upgrade path

Carolyn has to be planned a bit, because she has quite complicated deck building options. She can take as many horror healing cards as she'd like, but otherwise it's 0-3 Guardian, 0-5 Neutral and a TOTAL of 15 level 0-1 Seeker and/or Mystic cards.

Note that I'm running one In the Thick of It. This is highly optional, so freel free to get rid of it - Just replace the two Ancient Stones with some else - Promise of Power for example. Then buy the level 1 Ancient Stones after your first scenario. But starting with two mental trauma is more of an opportunity than a disadvantage for Carylon.

Important upgrades, in my order of priority
  • Ancient Stone The first upgrade should always be the two Ancient Stoness. Thanks to Shrewd Analysis, it will only cost you 3 measly Xp to upgrade both of them.

Always do your utmost to identify the stones in the very first game, because the upgrades ones will really make a difference for Carolyn. You don't need a ton secrets on them either; 6 or 7 is plenty.

The Shrewd Analysis is a two edged sword. On one hand it takes up a precious / slot. On the other hand it will save you 3 experience points. It does so because it'they are actually four kinds of upgraded stones but Carolyn only qualifies for one of the four types. Ergo, Shrewd Analysis will always upgrade to Ancient Stone. If you don't like trading one of your 15 mystic/seeker slots, skip Shrewd Analysis and just pay 3 Xp for the second stone.

Carolyn has two minor "combos" in her deck - one is lots and items and a Backpack. There will be two upgraded Backpack eventually, allowing you to thin your deck and to find those stones and other items you need. The other is Practice Makes Perfect and lots of skills to trigger with them.

Other upgrades (in any order you’d like)
  • Archive of Conduits Man, this is a fun card. I suggest spending those four leylines as soon as you can.
  • Deny Existence is the best healing card in the game.
  • Hallowed Mirror is better than it's 0 level sibling and I really enjoy that one. The maybe best part is that the songs remain in play even if the Hallowed Mirror leaves play.
  • If you got lots of Xp, you could upgrade your stick of Dynamite. Or buy another one if you happen to be stuck, like in a dream.
  • Mano a Mano is a great card for Carolyn, especially in Innsmouth. One action, zero resources to kill any 2 Hp enemy is a great time saver.

    Tips and advice

This deck is quite light on actual horror healing from the get go. The Ancient Stones are so good that we don't focus too much on healing horror in the 0 Xp version of the deck. Hallowed Mirror and Peter Sylvestre plus Solemn Vow will do most of the work. But apart from that, we're waiting for the Stones. The Archive of Conduits is decent too.

We will eventually buy two Backpackss, which is a great way to find stones, St. Hubert's Keys, Magnifying Glass and in general stuff that will help us thrive.

There's several ways Carolyn can heal horror from Agnes. The most straight forward one is Ancient Stone. Hallowed Mirror is another and Solemn Vow is the third. Moving horror from Agnes to Peter Sylvestre is really neat.

Agnes on her side can take horror damage from Forbidden Knowledge, from Shrivelling and special tokens, Ward of Protection or just attacks of opportunity.

Disclaimer - most of these "dynamic duo" decks are heavily inspired by other decks found here on Arkham. Thanks to everyone who shares the fruits of their labor - this is an amazing community . :)
