Disclaimer: I have not yet playtested this deck, this is mostly a fun little goofy attempt at my first proper thematically inspired deck. Comments and criticisms are very much welcome.
So basically this deck is meant to take Calvin to his thematical extreme, using only cards up to Forgotten Age; the as-of-now most recently released new-format investigator expansion.
- Broke because of Dark Horse
- Broken because of his vague origin story, though technically he's currently beyond that point of his classical hero's journey, but I wanted the title to be poetic
- Doomed because of, well, Doomed
- Damned also mostly because of his lore but I wanted more edgy adjectives in the title
- Dying because, yes, the lore, but he also teeters at the brink of death mechanically
Anyway, plan is to take On Your Own as soon as possible, and then building around that and Dark Horse with any 0-2 cost events that might seem suitable.
Beyond that, one could also go for an Exile deck, especially Flare if A Chance Encounter doesn't seem appealing, but also the upgraded Leather Coat and Cherished Keepsake, though your XP gains might be eaten up by the Exiled cards or even from buying Déjà Vu and it might be harder to get useful upgraded events.
That said, the best alternative for Calvin's much needed damage soak I could think of is Bulletproof Vest and the arguably game-breaking but oh so Calvin-synergetic Key of Ys, and that's just as expensive yet imo less thematic.
While on the topic of theme, it might also be fun to take Calvin on a little trip to The Bayou and attempt to pick up an extra lil' curse, but honestly the extra weakness might just be too much.
Speaking of, I've absolutely intended this deck to be played with a partner, mostly to circumvent the ally restriction by way of poaching (at the cost of thematic integrity, I know), but also to preferably have someone with access to Alyssa Graham and/or Scrying to mitigate the Doomed chain. Because if you make it to the final scenario and the hour is nigh you really want all hands on deck.
That said, true solo with this deck could be an awesome and certainly extremely thematic, if not horrifying, roleplaying experience.
