Since the appearance of Katana, I guess everyone of us was wandering how to make it work, because the power level can rise really high, but the way to achieve it seems extremely difficult. Testing at such precise level needs special back up, but building around one card never ends up to well, so it’s best to use other synergies as well. And that is when Chemistry Set enters the game which can be useful friend of seeker and has similar requirements. And of course enabler for both of those is Steady-Handed. The best investigator who can make use of this combo is definitely Joe Diamond, but remember if you want, you can create Vincent Lee deck with similar set up. This won’t be a deck that can do fireworks every turn, but it should be good universalist and I think it will be fun to play.
Here goes shut out to @PJFrigate who had similar idea, but they didn’t use the Chemistry set, and that’s why it's good to recall whole idea. Here is https://arkhamdb.com/decklist/view/47350/diamond-edged-katana-1.0
-
Cut enemies precisely into equal pieces with Katana which powers up your Dissection Tools and Microscope to perform better investigates and fights.
-
Bandolier helps hold all this junk. It's better than Tinker bc if you start with Katana then you won't be able to play your tools without discarding it first.
-
Get desired chemical results with Chemistry Set. Thanks to Steady-Handed you will be almost every turn getting extra 2 resources or card depending on your needs
-
Reuse the Steady-Handed with Fine Tuning, so you can guide your hand twice a turn
-
Wolf Mask, Hiking Boots and Dissection Tools helps you use Katana's fast action to get rid of single health enemies and with Michael Leigh + Strong-Armed can even perform a fast kill of three health ones with built in token fishing.
-
Surviving strategies:
- The only strong encounter protection in this deck is Ravenous Myconid if you find it you are safe
- In the hunch deck you have Logical Reasoning. It's there primarily to compensate for low willpower when dealing with treacheries, but you can use it to stay sane if you have Myconid in play.
- If not Michael Leigh is quite chunky. And If you know you're dying, remember you can always sacrifice Bandolier and Ravenous Myconid first.
- If you don't have Myconid, Inquiring Mind is there to help you pass vicious tests. Otherwise use it for extra flexibility on the scenario cards.
-
Resources
- Crack the Case goes to your regular deck. Whether it grants you 2,3 or 4 resources doesn't matter, those are fast so it will be at least emergency cache for you. The only problem is it won't help you with your set up.
- That's where Ever Vigilant comes in handy. This deck is reach in quite cheap assets so you will probably end up with net 5 action saved.
- If you still lack in resources f.e. For playing the Uncanny Growth each turn, use a little alchemy to transform your investigations into gold.
-
Draw and tutors:
- Most of the draw is tucked into the hunch deck, because those cards are for 2 resources and can be used universally.
- If you don't have set up for Katana it's better to be Prepared for the Worst with other more reliable weapons.
- If you have weapon leave No Stone Unturned in search for Steady-Handed if you have targets for it or Ravenous Myconid
Hunch deck:
-
Crack the Case is only insight that goes into your main deck
-
First Fine Tuning goes for Steady-Handed, second to Chemistry Set.
-
If you don't have Myconid, let Logical Reasoning go back into hunch deck if you have no treachery target.
-
Remember that your Detective's Colt 1911s can get you 4 free fast clues with Working a Hunch. You could build whole deck around this combo.
Other cards:
-
Fieldwork lets you aim for extra clue from Chemistry Set
-
Hiking Boots gives you some extra actions helping with activating Fieldwork
- If you don't want all of the Katana mess, and want to focus more on clues, add all the cards from the side deck and remove:

Nice one, I've had a lot of fun with Katana in Roland. I like the use of Hiking Boots and Fine Tuning for extra utility and the Myconid is a strong pick too.
