Carolyn Fern has poor stats, specifically poor combat and poor agility, and she only has high leveling in healing and neutral cards, making her one of the worst characters to play, but she was made thematically to be run in Dream Eaters, so here's what I threw together for the non-dream character support in my team.
Strategy: Mulligan for a weapon (Azure Flame or Brand of Cthugha), Stand Together or Voice of Ra, and Preposterous Sketches. Put healing on Soul Sanctification to add to your skill tests once you have the upgrade.
She is a bit pigeon-holed to play the Guardian team-support role, so cards like Stand Together and Motivational Speech are good. There's one card, key to her build, Soul Sanctification. This card created a good Healer archetype; you'll be making offerings to stay at max health and adding 2 to 4 to your skill checks. Obviously she'll need good healing cards to boost this strategy. Unexpected Courage and Take the Initiative help flexibility until she gets Soul Sanctification and can be replaced with upgrades.
To not completely focus on the archetype, I make most builds with 2 to 4 different allies, tools or weapons for the hands (clue tools here), an accessory (Hallowed Mirror), a body item (not as useful on this archtype), likely an arcane item (filled by upgrades), 1 to 2 resource adders, 1 to 2 different card draws, and 1 to 2 movement cards (Safeguard supports the team-role). Dodge helps a little with her combat and agility weaknesses. A single Dynamite Blast is fun, but here Storm of Spirits is for a swarm.
Upgrades: Every character needs at least one "weapon" in this game for flexibility. Azure Flame is better than Shrivelling at hard and expert difficulty, since you're less likely to be hurt, but 1-XP Brand of Cthugha is the only good non-weapon that uses willpower, though it can't be upgraded. Since these are both flame weapons, I see this thematically as Carolyn developing her fire magic.
Stand Together is great to update for the card draw. Forewarned upgrades Ward of Protection so that you don't potentially take damage. Moment of Respite and Stargazing replace Take the Initiative and Unexpected Courage when/if XP are available. "I've got a plan!" is a good card, but can't be upgraded and didn't make the cut. I might update Dodge or add Charisma depending on the team dynamic (if I'm being protected enough).
I use To Fight the Black Wind and Foolishness since they're more thematic to this campaign.
