Rita joins the Axe Gang
I just played Rita through the Return to The Dunwich Legacy together with Monterey Jack. It worked surprisingly well and was pretty fun to play so I just wanted to share a deck that doesn't need a lot of XP to get really good at dealing with enemies.
Difficulty: | ★★☆☆☆ |
Enemy Management: | ★★★★★ |
Clue-getting: | ★☆☆☆☆ |
Encounter protection: | ★★★☆☆ |
Survivability: | ★★★★☆ |
Economy: | ★★☆☆☆ |
Card Drawing: | ★☆☆☆☆ |
-
Bewitching will hold Dirty Fighting, Sweeping Kick, Easy Mark. You want to engage the first enemy that spawns and grab your Dirty Fighting.
-
with Dirty Fighting, Meat Cleaver, Hatchet and Peter Sylvestre you can deal with almost every enemy efficiently.
-
for a 3 HP enemy: Evade (6 ) -> Rita Young's for 1 damage, Dirty Fighting with Meat Cleaver (6-7 ) for 2 damage
-
for a 4-5 hp enemy just throw your Hatchet (9 ) before you do the above or just Long Shot
-
if you really need to get rid of a problem quickly, there is always the possibility of throwing away your Hatchet. You have two in the deck and Resourceful to get them back.
-
for enemies that are difficult to evade (Silas Bishop for example) you can use Sweeping Kick or Breaking and Entering
-
you will probably get hit once by your Hoods to get rid of them in one action, but 1 damage + 1 horror is not really a problem
-
you won't need a lot of money, so the Easy Marks you can grab with Bewitching are usually enough
-
Sparrow Mask is awesome because it helps you succeed at the evades and it gets refilled when you use Meat Cleaver. And of course it also is really good for all those and treacheries.
-
you probably won't fail a lot of treacheries but if you want to use Take Heart for resources or cards you can just try to investigate somewhere.
-
upgrade your Peter Sylvestres
-
your Cherished Keepsakes to Hunting Jackets, which gives you damage soak and resources
-
Jessica Hyde + Charisma makes you essentially immune to damage
-
there is Makeshift Trap with Simple and Poisonous if you want extra damage, especially nice to get rid of some Aloof enemies like Whippoorwills. It's ok but you can probably spend your 4 XP on something more useful. You can also combine that with Survival Technique, but that gets expensive fast and means more setup that you have to assemble.
-
Brute Force is also good with Dirty Fighting
-
"Look what I found!" (lvl 0 or 2) for more clues
-
could also run Live and Learn instead of Lucky!. Lucky gives you better treachery protection while Live and Learn is better protection against the for your evades + fights. Maybe be even run 1 Live and Learn and 1 Lucky!. Can also upgrade to Lucky! (3) later.

Aug 18, 2024The shoes got probably lost somewhere while upgrading ;) Had them in there at the beginning but never actually played them, but you can easily cut a Manual Dexterity for Track Shoes. Not a core item, but if there are no enemies around, Rita can sometimes stand around and would have time to play the Shoes, but I wouldn't spend resources on them before I have Cleaver, Dirty Fighting and Peter out. |
Aug 18, 2024This is basically the deck I wanted to build for her. Except that I would want to start with hunting jacket and 2 pelt shipment :) |
Aug 19, 2024Nice deck! I built a similar one recently here. The general idea is the same (combat oriented using Dirty Fighting and Bewitching) but with a couple of clueving options (shovel, belly of the beast), more economy and card draw (grift, at a crossroad) and keeping trackshoes. |

Aug 20, 2024Stunning Blow is also a very good option for dealing with hard to evade enemies! |
Aug 20, 2024Stunning blow is certainly a solid option. I plan to put it in my level 0 deck, but upgrade out of it once I have bewitching and dirty fighting, making the fist boost less relevant. |
Aug 23, 2024A cool interaction with Rita is that since both Dirty Fighting and her ability are "After" triggers, you can choose to attack with the Hatchet first, then deal 1 damage to the enemy, easily dealing with 3 HP enemies (and getting your Hatchet back), even if you don't have your Cleaver. |

But with Breaking and Entering or Sweeping Kick you again run into a problem, because the Evades trigger during other skill checks (the Investigate from Breaking and Entering or the Fight from Sweeping Kick), so you have to wait after those are over for your Dirty Fighting ... |
Aug 28, 2024I'm a big fan of this Rita deck- I built a goofier version with Survival Techniques/Makeshift Trap shenanigans, but I think this more streamlined version is probably the better way to run her. Those nested skill test rules will get you, though. |
Sep 12, 2024hi such a great deck, but what traits do you mostly write on Grizzled? |

Sep 12, 2024Where will you put the two traumas from "In the Thick of It"? |
Track shoes in lvl0 version but not here, where'd they go? Otherwise, cool deck.
