Old Yorick Shot Guns

Introduction

Yorick took a sharp turn in his career and now makes a living unburying old guns, tools, and occasionally some demons.

I wanted to make a deck that was able to consistently setup and sustain Old Shotgun with ease to show how powerful the weapon truly is.

Table of Contents:
  • Overview

  • Main Strategy

  • Upgrade Path

  • Make Your Own Deck!

Overview:

Difficulty: ★★★★☆
Enemy Management: ★★★★★
Clue-getting: ☆☆☆☆☆
Encounter protection: ★☆☆☆☆
Survivability: ★★★☆☆
Economy: ★★★★★
Card Drawing: ★★☆☆☆

Main Strategy:

The main strategy of this deck is to use ALMOST EVERY event in the deck and Yorick's ability to put the Old Shotgun in play with ammo. When that fails, you can always trust Cleaning Kit, Emergency Cache recharging the Cleaning Kit or .18 Derringer to cover for you until you can do that.

What do I mean by using ALMOST EVERY event in the deck (except Bury Them Deep) to put Old Shotgun in play with Ammo? Other than the obvious ones (Salvage (2) and Prepared for the Worst (2)), there is another way.

If you can kill an enemy while playing an event, you can use Yorick's ability to recycle Old Shotgun WITH AMMO from the discard pile. We have a few ways to do that:

So, to recap, the ways to get ammo for the Old Shotgun are:

Well, that was a lot. Other than that, you also need to setup so that "Devil" can stay at 1hp and always be ready to blow up when attacked. To do that, you should:

  • Get 2 physical traumas with ITTOI so you can start with 2 damages taken.
  • Play Jessica Hyde to soak any excess damage (if you don't soak them, "Devil" will blow up on its own).

The other cards are here to fill a certain necessity of this deck. Old Shotgun NEEDS high combat tests to deal consistent damage. For that we use Wolf Mask, an ally that grants a combat boost (Jessica Hyde or Beat Cop) and the skill cards.

Cherished Keepsake is a real fighter here. It serves two purposes: as the only horror soak and as a cheap way to discard a Cleaning Kit in play for future recycling.

Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • Really high damage output (consistently fighting for 3+ damage per action)
  • Extremely fun if you like thinking ahead and planning how you are going to use every card in hand.
  • Really cheap deck, almost every card in it costs 0 (12 out of 22, or 20 out of 30 if you count skills).
  • You can fight enemies engaged with allies without worrying about hitting your allies (unless you draw an Auto-Fail)

Cons

  • Weirdly fragile for Yorick
  • You can sometimes damage your allies with the "Devil"
  • "Devil" requires that you have Jessica Hyde in play (to soak excess damage) to avoid it blowing up on its own.

Make You Own Deck!

Yes! They function very differently from one another, and you should definitely choose based on your style. Devil has a waaay higher damage ceiling (if you consider "Dynamite-like" plays) but requires a weird setup that might not be for everybody. Beat cop is a lot more direct but requires you to leave the enemy at 1hp prior to the event, which can be challenging and will certainly lead to sub-optimal plays.

I think the same comment above regarding Beat Cop (2) also applies to Guard dogs. BUT, things are different if we consider both of them together! I think they fit each other really well and allow you to activate them to kill a 2hp enemy while playing an event, which put them at the same level as the "Devil" play. So, if you want a more explosive, high-risk, high-reward, and clunky playstyle, you should go with "Devil" + Jessica; if you want a more safe, flexible, and consistent playstyle, you should definitely go with Guard Dog(0/2) + Beat Cop (2).

It is a great card for this deck and will increase your survivability by a lot, but you will have to cut consistency for it, events or skills, it is up to you.

I don't recommend it, Old Shotgun really needs extra skill icons to function well, which long shot don't provide.

I had a weird experience with it. It was a reliable safety net when everything fails, but the shuffle effect counters Yorick's ability.

I haven't tested it, but it seems to fit weirdly in the deck. She is technically a damage soak but you can't ditch Jessica Hyde or Beat Cop (2) for her since the Old shotgun relies heavily in any Combat boosts you can provide.

Another card that I haven't tested, but this time it is definitely useful. If I would use it, I would definitely replace Overpower for it.

So, this is a strange take. .18 Derringer functions in this deck are: Be a backup weapon and a way to discard an Old Shotgun in play. Fire Axe (2) is an awesome way to discard an Old Shotgun in play because it is cheaper and fast, making it easier to use, but it will probably be a way worse backup weapon damage-wise because of the zero resources requirement. Would I use it? Maybe. If I want to test it, I would start the campaign with the Fire Axe (0) and then decide which weapon I prefer when I decide to make the upgrade.

It is, in fact, a far better card than the Derringer, no question asked. No ammo, same test bonus and damage, it is ok if it discards itself, Its upgrade is even better. I highly recommend this card if you don't care too much about it randomly discarding itself.

I like the idea of this deck. Seems fun to play. I've never thought of such synergies with Old Shotgun. I would add at least one Hunting Jacket, it's one of the better cards you can add to Yorick. However, looking only at performance, since your deck focuses only on fighting and there exists such weapons as Cyclopean Hammer, I think you can always create a better "fighter only" guardian for the same amount of xp. But I get it, it can be boring

@Son_of_Gothos I really like using 1 copy of Hunting Jacket (2) as an extra soaking target, but I don't think its ability is in any way useful to this deck (unless I'm missing something), it doesn't need extra resources.

If I want more soaking, I would include a Precious Memento as mentioned or a Plucky (3).

The idea of using AoO's as a way to get Old Shotgun in play with ammo blew my mind. I had never considered it!

Ive wanted Old Shotgun to works since it came out and never cracked it. The 2 xp always felt too high for a card you have to work for and i was focusing on Bob.

Absolutely loving the concept of this deck and its combos. I agree with RFreitas (ill spare you the @) that the AoO thing is a really nice spot. If going in on AoOs, Guard Dogs/Aquinnah (3) are always an option, or just Precious Memento early in place of Emergency Caches, but honestly these are just food for thought.

Great work mate

@StartWithTheName Thank you for your review. I completely forgot about guard dog, my bad, I will add a comment about it in the "Make your own deck" section.

No worries at all @trepicado. I also somehow completely missed you mention of Aquinnah in the text! I think i just always pair the two up when talking about Yorik!

I have tested this deck as the main fighter in Sed de Sangre (fanmade scenario from Los Archivos de Arkham) and it works incredibly well in scenarios with Aloof enemies. I've really enjoyed every Devil explotion. Good job.

@Julio_R Glad you liked it. This deck is able to pull some insane plays if you can setup correctly. It performed really well in Hemlock in my playthrough. The highlight was in the Longest Night scenario where it managed to setup 3 devil "location wipes" (3-4 enemies killed each time) and easily managed half the map alone (in a 4P campaign).

Amazing! Wini, Yorick and Preston are my favourite Old Shotgun users, and I will appreciate anyone who can make this weapon!

And that is a great idea to think about AoO, I didn't think about it, and since Yorick is tanky af, that's genius!

Dec 03, 2024 trepicado · 499

Thank you, @Valentin1331, I'm a big fan of your decks! Never imagined Preston as an Old Shotgun user.

I'll have to leave a disclaimer to anyone that tries this deck: Even though this is Yorick, this build is kinda fragile. If you're playing a hard campaign or can't rely that much on help from your allies, I would definitely cut some consistency for more horror soak (Charisma + x2 Peter Sylvestre (2) more than covers for it).

Parabéns pelo deck, parece ser bem divertido, preciso testar a Old Shotgun, sempre fico em dúvida como ela funciona.

"Killing an enemy with an event and using Yorick's ability (Act of Desperation and Toe to Toe)" Are we certain that this actually follows the rules and meets timing requirements? Wouldn't Yorick's reaction ability be occurring after the event has concluded it's play?

Dec 05, 2024 trepicado · 499

@tonyh220 So, according to @LordOfRavens on the Mythos Busters discord, it the event has a test, the enemy will die on the step 7 of the skill timing structure, before the event ends, so you can do the combo mentioned. Toe to toe also use that structure (even though the test automatically succeeds) because of the fight instruction (you can even commit skills to Toe to toe due to that).

@Lucasgb Feliz que gostou chefe, depois me passa o feedback se você acabar testando.

The Initiation Sequence states, that the card comences being played only after the AoO is completed, so this doesn't work.

Dec 12, 2024 trepicado · 499

@Adny Hi, I just sent a message to FFG to check their ruling on this, I did mention the Initiation Sequence rule. Once I get a response, I'll post it here.

I made a 22xp version of this deck by replacing Aquinnah with Bandages, cutting a Charisma, and reducing the backup weapon (.18 derringer) to a 0xp alternative. I also cut a PftW (2) & a Vicious Blow for 2 copies of At a Crossroads to help with drawing the necessary combo cards. Cut the other Vicious blow for another Toe to Toe since it's such a great enabler of the combo.

I went with baseball bat for the Lv. 0 weapon since it's cheaper to re-cycle and we should be discarding it often anyways. Less worried about failing to get the shotgun in hand thanks to at a crossroads.

@knoxb Really cool version. Bandages fit so well in the deck (I think it would be ever better in the Guard Dog (2) + Beat Cop (2) variant). Always love At a Crossroads, nice call. Baseball Bat is absolutely amazing in this deck, definitely better than upgraded Derringer, I'm kinda mad I've let that card slip, I'll add a section talking about it! Ace of Swords is also really cool, I would definitely replace some skills for it on a new playthrough with this deck.Tysm.

@trepicado I tried this deck in my TDC blind run, and it was a blast: arkhamdb.com

I'm fairly certain that we can't win the secret scenario if I have bringed any other deck to the campaign. Consistantly dealing 3 damage per action turns out to be much more powerful then I initially thought.
