Disclaimer: This deck only works with taboo!
I have a love/hate relationshit by the exploits pointed out by K_oroviev (in their review of Burn After Reading and Iduno in their review of Memories of Another Life (regarding Adaptable), it inspired me to create this deck, which can utilize both. Let's take a look at what this deck does:
- Exile Signum Crucis with Burn After Reading (as a level 2 card) and repurchase it with the help of Pelt Shipment. Adding the exiled Signum Crucis to your deck costs 0 experience.
- Get Drawing Thin, Shed a Light and Scavenging via Adaptable over two scenarios, saving us 12 experience (14 for both copies of the three cards minus 2 for purchasing Adaptable).
That's it, basically. The rest of the deck is typical difficulty-0-play and other minor synergies:
- Reduce shroud and enemy evade (Flashlight, Old Keyring, Matchbox, Stealth, Improvised Weapon, Makeshift Trap, Winging It and Gumption) to trigger Shed a Light and Exploit Weakness and generally pass skill tests.
- Recur Flashlight, Old Keyring and Matchbox (or Pelt Shipment) with Scavenging and Shed a Light and Gumption with Resourceful and Scrounge for Supplies.
- Stray Cat triggers Close Call easily if you want to lean more into the enemy manager role and serves as a backup for our Stealth shenanigans.
- Why Dark Horse? You need to oversucceed by 2 to trigger Scavenging, Preston has only 1... I found that the easiest way in this deck to get him +1 . On the other hand, you could ditch Scavenging and Dark Horse and replace it with Pushed to the Limit and Salvage, serves a similar purpose.
- If you find the deck slot, pumping the difficulty via Drawing Thin and then fishing for the elder sign via Against All Odds might get you an auto-success.
- Although Pelt Shipment could help us get Improvised Weapon and Winging It into the discard pile early, in this deck you actually want to make use of the difficulty reduction as much as possible. So keeping them in your hand and playing them is favored over discarding. Being Preston the resource cost for the comparably weak effect is also not an issue. If Pelt Shipment gets in your way though, consider discarding it and getting it just before the game ends via Resourceful or Scrounge for Supplies.
Have fun tabusing ;)

Apr 09, 2025Is there an FFG ruling on these interactions? I know when Pathfinder was a +2 XP taboo in 2022, people like Roland could still take it because it was still considered a 1 XP card - so I sort of see the logic. Equally though, common sense would say these exploits go against the spirit of the respective taboos on the base cards. However I guess as with all things people should play in a way they find fun. |

I like all that xp save too much. You may use Lawrence Carlisle for the +1
