True, True Awakening

G0tA5V-X0AAJjjl.png

I'm continuing my series using the Drowned City cards. Some combos are so powerful that they need to be played - Double, Double with True Awakening is just that...

Overview

Campaign starter and planned progression

In the Thick of It makes this a 29 XP deck. I would recommend two physical trauma in case Searching for Izzie starts ruining your good time (True Awakening allows for healing in either case). I thought about Hot Streak a lot on this deck, but I think the card draw of Emergency Cache •• actually works much better. 0 XP deck is below (and link here).

Final thoughts

This deck is powerful - probably my strongest of the series alongside the Amanda deck - because here you really don't have to test very often. Particularly at two-player where the testless clues on offer here are substantial, I don't think I realised how strong this could be. Jenny is also the perfect investigator for the deck, as the extra resource per upkeep is very significant with a lot of your events costing two or multiples of two (e.g. Counterespionage and Intel Report costing 4 when paying for their add-ons).

In one on my playtests (Film Fatale), I managed to: cycle twice healing that horror with Peter, play Extensive Research and Intel Report (two clues) twice each, double double Sneak Attack, double double Emergency Cache •• and True Awakening multiple times, finish two Elites off with Blood-Rite, as well as do several successful tests with Lockpicks • and Bum's Rush. Double doubling your resource cards is frankly bonkers, and when I did draw Leo De Luca I could pay his steep cost without care.

I've wanted to make big-hand pay-to-win Jenny for a while, and with TDC and True Awakening it became so much easier. If you want a powerhouse deck, you won't be disappointed!

Since this runs one single accessory and runs enough card draw to cycle the whole deck, could The Red Clock synergize well instead of the upgraded Lucky Cigarette Case?

Sep 16, 2025 HungryColquhoun · 21587

@PaperCryptid Thanks for the comment. Personally for decks which cycle I think any additional card draw is a good thing, and beyond that when you've cycled then - as Lucky Cigarette Case ••• allows for tutoring - it enables you to get at your True Awakening and Extensive Research again faster (and is easily triggerable on a Lockpicks • test even with Jenny's iffy statline).

I also like cards with reliable effects, and with The Red Clock while all the effects are useful the strange grab bag of powers it offers don't always land at an optimal time. I suppose it's free resources as well periodically, but this deck doesn't really hurt for cash (when you Double, Double one Emergency Cache •• then with upkeep as well that's 8 resources in a round).

As always though make these decks your own! If you try it with The Red Clock let me know what you thought to it.

Amazing to see some love for good ol' Jenny Barnes.

It's really one of the few investigators remaining for whom there weren't any good updated decks available.

And while I wasn't so sure by Double, Double True Awakening at a first glance, reading your description made me realise how good it is. I will definitely try this deck out and recommend it to any future player wanting to play the dilettante.

Congrats on this achievement!

@Valentin1331 Thanks for the praise! Yeah Jenny hasn't had too many strong decks recently and there's also very few big hand Jenny decks out there either which makes this a nice change of pace.

I did have a look at what other Jenny decks had been posted recently and were popular, and I thought this one by Tùng Râu looked really cool. Most of the other popular decks though are 3+ years old, so I think it's fun to spotlight something new that an older investigator can do. Going forward I think when I make any legacy environment decks, I'll do it when there is an especially good combo with an old investigator and the new card set - but I'll try to play current otherwise...

She should really have Socialite, too.

Oct 08, 2025 HungryColquhoun · 21587

@MrGoldbee Hard agree! At least they added it for Parallel Jenny. Squeezing in a Name Your Price would have been fun (but would have likely needed more resource economy, as this deck is good at spending its cash). Also not a Double, Double target as it's removed from the game.

I think a proto-version of this deck was Name Your Price Skids, looking at crazy auto-damage with Dynamite Blast. I couldn't quite make it work, but the same train of thought filtered into this.

Damn, this deck is strong. I have tried a couple of times and in everyone of them performed greatly. Even when my two basic weeknesses in a 19xp stand-alone were amnesia and unspeakable oath. Literally, lose your whole hand , but two turns after it was already recovered and running again. Great idea! <3

Oct 09, 2025 HungryColquhoun · 21587

@Extremyx Thank you, that's what I like to hear! Yeah in all my testing it performed really well - I think the lowkey really good thing about the deck is Occult Lexicon and so testless damage Blood-Rite (and for Blood-Rite also then serving as a myriad card for Dream-Enhancing Serum). It really has everything you need!

Beat me to it, although if anyone is interested for some more fun alternatives to this type of deck, I had a similar core idea but instead leaning into Synergy cards that loved to be doubled as well with Cheat the System and Call for Backup. Along with True Awakening and Emergency Cache look at that triple 2 EXP neutral card trouble!

As we now have a great lvl 0 Mystic perm in The Great Work along with of course Charon's Obol to ramp quickly to Double, Double shenanigans.

Used Lexicon/Dream, Hallowed Mirror, and Tennessee Sour Mash -> Unscrupulous Loan for the Yellow/Blue/Red pickups. Having both Call for Backup/Hallowed Mirror got me pretty well covered on the health/sanity even for the team. As double Soothing Melodies or Calls makes everyone happy at a table. Although if someone else was running Short Rest along with me would likely sub it in as well instead of "You've had worse...".

How about add Bound for the Horizon to this deck? At first glance it's not aligned well with the concept of this deck, but in my testing it works pretty good.

Dec 16, 2025 Rentgen · 1

I disagree with you. Lucky Cigarette Case doesn't fit into the overall concept of the deck, which is based on cards without checks rather than overexceeding. While it's not a problem to exceed on normal difficulty, it becomes extremely challenging to exceed with 3-3-3-3 on expert difficulty, even with the use of master keys. In addition, the resource load will increase, as you will need to invest more money from Streetwise in tests. Therefore, Red Clock is much more suitable for this deck.

For expert difficulty, I have made a greater focus on exploration by adding Lanterns, which allow you to collect clues from locations with a clarity of 2 or lower. And when improving an ally, I added Lola Santiago, which enhances our 2 main skills, allows us to collect evidence without checks, and combines with the lantern.

I wouldn't claim that this deck is as powerful as Amanda, but I must admit that your Jenny deck is one of the few that can be played on the on a higher difficulty than standard.

ahah, sorry, not "master keys" lockpicks, of course, i translated it from russian with google, cause so long text on eng its hard for me.

Dec 19, 2025 HungryColquhoun · 21587

@Rentgen I understand the concern with the statline re. LCS, but with Lockpicks it works fine.

Jan 07, 2026 HungryColquhoun · 21587

@Flame_ustc I think it's an alright idea, but as Leo De Luca provides an action and soak I prefer him (especially as it's only 1 more XP with Charisma than Bound for the Horizon). As mentioned the deck makes a lot of money, so Leo isn't has hard to get into play as he usually is.

A bit late to the party for me but you can run a similar combo with Alessandra Zorzi.

It does miss out on the testless options that make this deck shine though. Arguably the extra action for parleys the 13 point statline and better distribution still make for a good alternative, since the core combo still works and double, double really shines with the Countess.

Zamacona is a bit more of a pain to deal with with the fast draw than Searching for Izzie but I think the trade offs could be worth it for anyone wanting to try their own take on this fun idea.

Overall great concept for a deck and nice to know the Rogue's get to fight Marion for using this fun XP card to it's fullest. Thanks for sharing, your decks are always thought provoking and interesting!

Hi, I want to take this deck to (Return to) The Dunwich Legacy. This means fewer xp + needing answers for Beyond the Veil.

This will be a two player campaign. My friend brings William Yorick, he packs 2x Alter Fate. I will be the main cluever.

In the Thick of it gives me 1x Lockpicks (1), 3x Easy Mark and 1x Counterespionage. The second copy of Lockpicks (1) is on the buy-list because it's a massive effect for very little XP. I am alsof looking at Well Connected to turn all those resources into successful tests from the start.

I took out Peter Sylvestre for 1x Deny Existence. I need to be able to stop Beyond the Veil myself and this seems a good answer I can go and dig for. Leo de Luca is my only Ally.

We probably won't earn enough XP to upgrade everything. What would you prioritize? How would you change the deck if you had to take it to Dunwich?

Thank you for your list. It has inspired me.

Apr 13, 2026 HungryColquhoun · 21587

@Someguy842 Glad you like it! Yeah I thing one of the main negatives of running this with Alessandra Zorzi is that she has a fatter deck, so cycling and finding Double, Double is a bit more problematic. A good variant can definitely be made with her though!

@Da_Great_MC Apologies for the slow reply. If you're removing Peter Sylvestre I would likely stick to my suggested upgrade track, with the exception of moving Streetwise above Double, Double (i.e. where Charisma which you no longer need is currently).

@HungryColquhoun Hello, Bum's Rush is now tabooed to cost 1XP, what's the best replacement for starter deck?

May 28, 2026 HungryColquhoun · 21587

@Asceron Sorry for the delay! There is always Cheap Shot, or something like Quick Exit from the new Chapter 2 cards. Cheap Shot is a fight action (so only boostable with icons) so it's less ideal as a result.

May 29, 2026 Asceron · 1

@HungryColquhoun Today I picked the just published in my language Film Fatale, so Chapter 2 is gonna get localised in like a year :D Sticking to Chapter 1 cards and campaigns for now. Thanks for the suggestion of Cheap Shot.

Jun 07, 2026 HungryColquhoun · 21587

@Asceron Hope it goes well! I tested this deck on Film Fatale myself.
