Hello ? Yes, this is dog

WARNING ! Vicious Blow is a placeholder for Inspiring Presence as the latter is not yet released.

The idea of this deck came to me when unitled noticed adding doom was optional when using David Renfield’s ability. He built a Daisy deck to leverage the interesting math behind David Renfield while I chose to try a Pete deck as Pete can make an extra use for David Renfield.

On a 5 treshold agenda, for example, you can get an insane number of resources :

  • turn 1 : total doom is 0, get 1 resource, discard, get 2 resources
  • turn 2 : total doom is 3, get 2 resources, discard, get 2 resources
  • turn 3 : total doom is 4, get 3 resources, discard, get 4 resources, get rid of Renfield

That is a total of 14 resources for 3 cards discarded. To get rid of David Renfield, you can use Smoking Pipe or, better, Calling in Favors.

Calling in Favors and A Chance Encounter are there to give you multiple uses of David Renfield.

At level 0 there’s not much to do with all this resources but on levelling things get interesting (Scrapper, Plucky, Will to Survive). Madame Labranche and the neutral skills should help you draw cards for fueling Pete's ability. You can also sue Inspiring Presence.

Upgrade path should be something along the lines of :

Once more, great thanks to unitled and zozo for their invaluable guidance.

Looks like some absolute bonkers efficiency from Renfield here. I think it's potentially reasonable Solo once you grab Scrapper and a couple of Plucky as you'll have bags and bags of money. Flare will help pull out Renfield early on as well?

I reckon you could maybe swap out Madame Labranche unless she is there for a particular reason? Maybe a Peter Sylvestre instead, or even Aquinnah? She quite likes Inspiring Presence too!

I slotted in Madame Labranche for card draw but it might effectively not be efficient as the deck already has other means of drawing. I like the idea of Aquinnah : Calling in Favors helps paying for her high cost while getting David Renfield out of the table.

Nice deck you built, finally someone making use of "Ashcan" Petes ability (other than Duke).

For clarification of your calculation, you basically add 2 doom to David Renfield in turn 1, none on turn 2 and 2 again in turn 3 before removing all of them?

Why did you include Scavenging, when you have only 3 items in the deck? Rather low chance you get to use it. Is it for the Baseball Bats effect?

Jan 07, 2018 AkaanQ · 1545

Thanks @Django, you're right, Scavenging is there for Baseball Bat but it is indeed not a very efficient as there are not much item in the deck.

I made a second version of this deck replacing Scavenging with Rabbit's Foot and Madame Labranche with Peter Sylvestre.

Nice combo-deck! What about adding Look what I found! in the deck? Without Magnifying Glass I miss some buff for investigation.

Jan 08, 2018 AkaanQ · 1545

Thanks @Irwwon. Investigation buffs come from Plucky once you get XP but I guess you could have "Look what I found!" or Newspaper in the level 0 to help pass the first scenario (replacing Dig Deep for example).

@AkaanQ sorry for the off-topic, but how do you put the card name with a link to the image? I can't find any tutorial here. Thank you in advance.

Good job on a title-click-bait. The deck deliveres what the title promises. Thanks :)

Jan 09, 2018 AkaanQ · 1545

@Irwwon just type # and you’ll see a list of cards. Type a few letters from the card name to filter this list. Tou can also use $ for symbols and @ for users.

@AkaanQ is it possible to substitute baseball bat with fire ax? I was thinking might be of more use since you would have all of these resources.

Jan 10, 2018 Irwwon · 1

@AkaanQthe problem with Fire Axe is that you need to have no resources in order to be able to do the extra damage. It's better to invest the resources in Scrapper to boost the skill.

Jan 10, 2018 AkaanQ · 1545

Exactly ! And the deck can afford Baseball bat as there no other asset taking hand slots.

Generally speaking, the point of most weapons in this game is to deal more damage for action compression. Killing 3+ HP enemies with bare hands takes too much time.

I was wondering about A Chance Encounter, what's your experience with it? Using it on David Renfield you basically trade 4 actions for 3 ressources, so it would better to gather ressources 3 times instead?

Explanation on 4 actions: draw chance encounter, gain ressource, play chance encounter, draw a card to discard for petes ability (upkeep phase is like 2 more actions for players: action 4: gain ressource; action 5: draw a card)

Thanks for sharing the article, it was some nice ideas, though i don't agree to completely ignore card and ressource costs, when evaluating a cards "worth".

@AkaanQI was wordering, why you didn't mention the decks signature combo, using the phone on Duke, to have him call a friend?

Jan 21, 2018 CecilAlucardX · 10

For an early (or even late game use) i recommend Teamwork; why just hoard all those resources when you can trade them to your Guardian? Or Mystic? Or Rogue who is missing Hot Streak? Alternatively, you could add Charles Ross instead, allowing you to pay for items (although this doesnt let you pay for spells or allies.) The beauty of this is it allows them to give you stuff in return. Maybe your Mystic has an extra copy of that Shriveling 5, or your Guardian has Shotgun (we call it shotFUN), the Rogue could hand you those dice to use with all your money... The Hobo drifter could be the parties' bankroller!

Uh... Will to Survive + Resourceful + True Survivor. Congratulations! You WIN! YATTA! PERFECT!

Mar 07, 2018 Django · 5063

I've seen your comment on True Survivor. You mean, to use David Renfield and Madame Labranche to gain the ressources for the combo?

Did you consider Moonlight Ritual for this deck?

Mar 07, 2018 CecilAlucardX · 10

Will to survive means no tests. Resourceful gets it back. True survivor gets back Resourceful (And Inspiring Presence). Rinse and repeat for as long as you have resources.

Mar 07, 2018 CecilAlucardX · 10

I just realized what you actually meant. Yes, David Renfield (Labranche doesn't help with money, but it does help with cards early on to get your pieces. It's like card cyling for money) does get the money for the combo. Once you have a cache of money, you are good for 3-4 turns worth of the combo, with some turns not needing it. As to moonlight ritual, I didn't have any issues bouncing/pitching Renfield when I needed to, and as the deck runs inspiring presence (MOAR RENFIELD) and Renfield himself, that extra slot works better for Lab Assistant (or Luca if no-one else is running him). The extra ally lets you have an extra way to ditch renfield if you need to, and Lab Assistant draws cards; which I found to be VERY necessary in the deck.

Nice deck idea! One thing I'm wondering though, can we actually use Calling in Favors to return Duke to our hand? The loyal mutt does have a casting cost of 2. So it should be possible to save him just as he accumulated enough damage / horrors or from the effect of Chance Encounter?

Jul 11, 2018 CecilAlucardX · 10

@copydawg Yes, you can, and absolutely should. If you can get David in play via other means (I actually added in Flare because it's good to grab David if you don't have him, or Leo, or just to pretend you are a wizard and shout "FIREBALL" before shooting the big bad in the face.) It is an action, and such can be only used during the investigation phase, so you can only use it when duke has at most 1 damage and 2 horror. Still, its super cool, and duke only costs 2 resources, which you DONT CARE ABOUT in this deck. And yes, it will nullify the effects of Chance Enounter should Duke suffer an untimely fate. I played the True Suvivor build of this in standard duo Path to Carcosa, and it made scenarios laughably easy once you got everything working. I will note it tends to work better in Solo/Duo where you don't have to spend so much money on everything, for every test IE Spending 2+ resources per test for 2 clues is more reasonable than for 4 clues.

Jul 11, 2018 Django · 5063

I also played the "true survivor" version if this deck through carcosa with another player, it was just ridiculous especially with Quick Thinking.

The combo takes the fun out of the game, as it trivialises it too much. So i doubt i'll ever play it again.

Thanks for the confirmation @CecilAlucardXlol at the Flare. Might as well imagine Lina Inverse doing the Fireball slinging thing. I made and have been playtesting a Calling in Favors deck for Pete too. It's heavy on filtering and recycling with cards such as Backpack, Resourceful, and Scavenging. But without Dark Horse since it's hard being broke when we got Renfield on our side.

Jul 11, 2018 Django · 5063

Are you talking about lina inverse from slayers anime? I watched it decades ago, it was really fun!
