This is what we’ve been waiting for! Jenny is about to reach Kadath and we’re about to see the payoffs for our earlier choices. Our fellow cat knows the truth. Randolph is being visibly uncomfortable. Still, there’s nothing related to that in the setup instructions. Surely, it wouldn’t be a fake-out? Then there’s all the evidence we’ve gathered and the fact Jenny hasn’t strayed from the path. I see that we’ve got five Act cards, so perhaps each advance is going to refer to one of these earlier choices? And speaking of choices, there’s a wide selection of interesting Rogue cards in the last two mythos packs. Alas, I could afford to add just one Haste as the rest of available XPs went to streamlining Jenny’s deck. It’s a shame Delilah isn’t going to join us. Perhaps in the next campaign.
Jenny begins the scenario with 1 Mental Trauma.
Pre-Mulligan Hand: Lockpicks, Easy Mark, Leo De Luca, Unexpected Courage, Momentum
Opening Hand: Lockpicks, Easy Mark, Leo De Luca, Hard Knocks, "Watch this!"
#1
- PLAY Easy Mark (2 resources, draw "Watch this!")
Ideally I’d wait for another copy of Easy Mark, but I don’t want to waste actions on basic draws or resources. BTW, see the second "Watch this!"? Jenny is eager to prove herself.
- PLAY Leo De Luca
- MOVE to Plateau of Leng
OK, I need two clues and I’ve got two easy investigations. So far so good. At the moment I’m most concerned about getting weapons and those Tablet tokens in the chaos bag. Minus four is harsh.
- PLAY Hard Knocks
- Upkeep: draw Lone Wolf, 4 resources total.
#2
- Mythos: 1/7 doom, Abandoned by the Gods (+1)
That’s an irrelevant encounter card. Even if I pulled the Tentacle token, I would need to choose three out of five numbers, so both Lockpicks and Lone Wolf are untouchable. It’s a good thing that Jenny doesn’t need to concern herself with other investigators.
- PLAY Lone Wolf
- PLAY Lockpicks
- INVESTIGATE with Lockpicks (, 1 clue from Plateau of Leng)
- MOVE to Cold Wastes
- Upkeep: draw Leo De Luca, 2 resources total.
#3
- Mythos: 2/7 doom, Mysterious Chanting, Acolyte (at Onyx Gates)
- Lone Wolf
- INVESTIGATE with Lockpicks (, 2 supplies left, × Cold Wastes, 1 damage to Leo De Luca)
- INVESTIGATE (-1, 1 clue from Cold Wastes)
I expect that to be Jenny’s last non-buffed investigation in the game. The Skull tokens are getting worse and with five Acts total I want to keep her Lockpicks around for as long as possible.
- advance act (High Priest Not to Be Described at Monastery of Leng, The Thing in the Robes)
No weapons. Fortunately, the scenario designers anticipated this problem and it’s possible to defeat this guy with clues. Although, it’s going to take at least four actions.
- MOVE to Monastery of Leng
- INVESTIGATE ( Streetwise, -3, 1 clue from Monastery of Leng)
- Enemy: High Priest Not to Be Described attacks (1 horror to Leo De Luca, 1 damage), stunned the priest
Enemies exhaust after attacking! That little factoid lets us exchange an evade test for a damage and a horror.
- Upkeep: draw Switchblade, 3 resources total.
#4
- Mythos: 4/7 doom, Dreamer's Curse (commit Leo De Luca & "Watch this!", bid 3 resources, , gain 6 resources)
It would’ve been an opportunity to commit both ["Watch these!"], but I've only had 3 resources to wager.
- Lone Wolf
- INVESTIGATE with Lockpicks (, 1 supply left)
Snapped!
- INVESTIGATE ( Streetwise, -4)
- INVESTIGATE ( Streetwise, 0)
- maneuvered the priest closer
With her inept fumbling Jenny tricked the so-called priest to come closer. I bet he was having a laugh at her expense. Which I don’t really mind given that the priest doesn’t do attacks of opportunity.
- The Thing in the Robes (defeat High Priest Not to Be Described)
- advance act (Beyond Dreams)
- Upkeep: draw Easy Mark, 5 resources total.
#5
- Mythos: 5/7 doom, Law of 'Ygiroth (Discord)
- Lone Wolf
- MOVE to Cold Wastes
- MOVE to Onyx Gates
Muahahaha! Zero clues! Jenny gets to pass the gate as if it wasn’t there.
- advance act (resolve Grand Design interlude, Truth and Lies)
On the plus side there was no need to fight the Acolyte. On the minus side there are over thirty cards in the encounter deck and it's going to be difficult to filter them all. And our earlier suspicions were correct, Randolph wasn’t Randolph.
- MOVE to Northern Tower (of Illusion and Myth)
- INVESTIGATE with Lockpicks ( Streetwise, +1, 1 clue from Northern Tower of Illusion and Myth)
- Upkeep: draw Psychosis, 6 resources total.
Board State Reminder: 7 health, 6 sanity, 6 resources, 1 clue
In Play: Leo De Luca (1 damage & 1 horror), Switchblade, Lockpicks (1 supply), Hard Knocks, Lone Wolf
In Hand: Law of 'Ygiroth (Discord), "Watch this!", Easy Mark
Threat: Psychosis
#6
- Mythos: 5/7 doom, Nyarlathotep
No way! But... What do I do now? The tower requires an explicit permission to use.
- Lone Wolf
- Psychosis
- Truth and Lies
Nothing but non-Hidden cards. Which isn’t all that bad given that I can discard them.
- MOVE to The Great Hall
- Upkeep: draw Jenny's Twin .45s, 8 resources total.
#7
- Mythos: 6/7 doom, Deeper Slumber
- Lone Wolf
- MOVE to Eastern Tower (of Infinite Truth)
These names are so D&D. It’s awesome.
- INVESTIGATE with Lockpicks ( Streetwise, -2, 1 clue from Eastern Tower of Infinite Truth)
- Deeper Slumber
Jenny yawns. That’s two actions wasted, but with the amount of Hidden cards I suspect are in the encounter deck I don’t think I can afford these cards to crowd out my hand.
- Upkeep: draw Hard Knocks, 10 resources total.
#8
- Mythos: 7/7 doom, advance agenda (Nyarlathotep attacks thrice, 3 horror, The Shape of Chaos), Restless Journey (Lies)
Nice contrast to Deeper Slumber. Restless Journey is action-less, but it could lead to extra doom. Jenny’s deck doesn’t rely on committing cards, so I think I can ignore it for the moment.
- Lone Wolf
- Truth and Lies
Nothing.
- INVESTIGATE with Lockpicks ( Streetwise, 0, 1 clue from Eastern Tower of Infinite Truth)
- Truth and Lies (Law of 'Ygiroth (Pandemonium) & Whispering Chaos (North))
OK. I need one more Whispering Chaos and one certain other card I cannot mention.
- MOVE to The Great Hall
- Upkeep: draw Elusive, discard Jenny's Twin .45s & Easy Mark, 11 resources total.
#9
- Mythos: 1/5 doom, Acolyte (at Northern Tower of Illusion and Myth)
- Lone Wolf
- Law of 'Ygiroth (Discord) (discard Elusive)
- MOVE to Northern Tower of Illusion and Myth
- FIGHT with Switchblade ( Hard Knocks, commit "Watch this!", bid 3 resources, -2, gain 6 resources, defeat Acolyte)
- Northern Tower of Illusion and Myth ( Streetwise, , discard Whispering Chaos (North), defeat Nyarlathotep)
One down! Our slippery little friend is no longer in my hand, so I can comment without risking instant insanity. That particular interaction is going to be hilarious in multiplayer, given that one has to coordinate Nyarlathoteps with Whispering Chaoses.
- INVESTIGATE with Lockpicks ( Streetwise, -2, 1 clue from Northern Tower of Illusion and Myth)
- Upkeep: draw Momentum, 10 resources total.
#10
- Mythos: 2/5 doom, Whispers of Hypnos ()
Freebie.
- Lone Wolf
- Truth and Lies (Law of 'Ygiroth (Chaos) & Whispering Chaos (East))
Ehhh... No, I must do something about that or else both my Lockpicks and Switchblade are blocked.
- Law of 'Ygiroth (Chaos) (discard Hard Knocks)
- MOVE to The Great Hall
- MOVE to Southern Tower (Southern Tower of the Queen of Night)
- Upkeep: draw Enchanted Blade, 13 resources total, discard Whispers of Hypnos.
Board State Reminder: 7 health, 3 sanity, 13 resources, 0 clues
In Play: Leo De Luca (1 damage & 1 horror), Switchblade, Lockpicks (1 supply), Hard Knocks, Lone Wolf
In Hand: Law of 'Ygiroth (Pandemonium), Restless Journey (Lies), Whispering Chaos (East), Momentum, Enchanted Blade
#11
- Mythos: 3/5 doom, Liar with No Face
Four health and hunter, that’s a bit annoying.
- Lone Wolf
- FIGHT with Switchblade ( Hard Knocks, -4, 1 damage to Liar with No Face)
- FIGHT with Switchblade ( Hard Knocks, , 1 damage to Liar with No Face)
These Tablets! I seem to pull them so often I need to overbuff tests just to feel comfortable. Fortunately, Jenny is endlessly resourceful.
- FIGHT with Switchblade ( Hard Knocks, -2, defeat Liar with No Face)
- INVESTIGATE with Lockpicks ( Streetwise, , 1 clue from Southern Tower of the Queen of Night)
- Upkeep: draw Lone Wolf, 8 resources total.
#12
- Mythos: 4/5 doom, Restless Journey (Fallacy)
- Lone Wolf
- Truth and Lies (Restless Journey (Hardship))
- MOVE to The Great Hall
- MOVE to Western Tower (of Primeval Light)
- INVESTIGATE with Lockpicks ( Streetwise, , 1 clue from Western Tower of Primeval Light)
- Upkeep: draw Easy Mark, discard Lone Wolf, 9 resources total.
#13
- Mythos: 5/5 doom, advance agenda (1 damage, Chaos Incarnate), Whispers of Hypnos ()
Fire rounds remaining and I’m only halfway done with Act 4. There’s one more Act after that. Jenny is running around the towers and the situation isn’t changing much. If that continues Nyarlathotep might decide her little investigation is no longer amusing.
- Lone Wolf
- Truth and Lies
Nothing!
- INVESTIGATE with Lockpicks ( Streetwise, commit Easy Mark, -4, 1 clue from Western Tower of Primeval Light)
- Truth and Lies (Whispering of Chaos (South))
- MOVE to The Great Hall
- Upkeep: draw Elusive, 10 resources total, discard Whispers of Hypnos.
#14
- Mythos: 1/5 doom, Whispering of Chaos (West)
I don’t need more of these, I need Nyarlathotep!
- Lone Wolf
- Elusive to Eastern Tower of Infinite Truth
- INVESTIGATE with Lockpicks (-1, 1 clue from Eastern Tower of Infinite Truth)
- Truth and Lies
Nothing. SERIOUSLY! It’s Jazz Mulligan all over again. At this point the encounter deck is almost empty and there’s no reason to go for clues. I’ll do some minor cleanup instead and allow Jenny to piece her mind back together.
- Law of 'Ygiroth (Pandemonium) (discard Enchanted Blade)
- RESOURCE
- Upkeep: draw Lockpicks, 12 resources total.
#15
- Mythos: 2/5 doom, Nyarlathotep
YES!
- Lone Wolf
- Eastern Tower of Infinite Truth ( Streetwise, commit Lockpicks, +1, discard Whispering Chaos (East), defeat Nyarlathotep)
- R1.
Otherwise... What… My eyes first registered the main body of text, the one describing Voltron!Nyarlathoteps and for a moment I thought there’s no way to chew through that much health in two rounds. Then I saw that Jenny qualifies for R1 and I’m so glad Tommy lost the Silver Key over in Campaign B. It turns out the whole Black Cat searching for the truth stuff was a bait for overachieving players! Granted, R2 would’ve been an even better ending, but given what was happening in the game I’ll take R1 with pleasure. It’s an amazing final scenario with unique mechanics. I’d go as far as to say that it’s the best final scenario released so far. In any case, Jenny wakes up. She probably feels stiff and hungry and needs to adjust her eyes to the real world. Her story is over, but… Because Jenny left the Dreamlands there’s no one there to assist Tommy. And, as we’ve seen so far, Tommy is much less suited for solo games.
